A Visit to Springfield with Ray and Carolyn

Lynda, Ray, Carolyn and I came up to Springfield, Missouri yesterday. On our drive up US65 we sighted a lovely double rainbow. It was one of the most intense ones that any of us had seen. We came to Springfield so Lynda could go on a hot air balloon ride. Ray and Carolyn gave her the gift certificate two Christmases ago, but we've just gotten around to getting things lined up for the four of us to make the trip. The balloon ride was to have started a few minutes ago, but it has been canceled because of a thunderstorm that is moving in from the west.
But we didn't put all of our eggs in one basket. We had planned other things for Springfield in addition to the balloon ride. One of those was a visit this morning to Missouri State University where one of Ray's former students is connected with the drama department. Mark has been with the university for fourteen years. After he and Ray visited for several minutes, Mark took us on a short tour. We had a nice lunch at Schlotzskys then went on to the Bass Pro Shop here in Springfield. The store is the original and the world headquarters. It is huge. Ray had arranged to meet another former student at the store. J.T. (the former student) is instrumental in the design and construction of the displays at Bass Pro Shops. He took us on a tour of the main building pointing out things we probably would have otherwise missed. The tour included some back scene areas and some details of how items were made.

Harvest Time

I enjoy looking out over the fields of cotton, rice, soybeans, and grain as the crops mature and reach the stage for harvest. I drove up to the Wynne the other day, but I forgot to take may camera so I didn't get shots of the different crops. I did go back that way today just to get a shot of a cotton field.

A cousin that I haven't met yet posted the following picture on FaceBook. She is a retired English teacher, so the posting was understandable. Most people who know me will understand that it is also appropriate for me to repost her note here.

A Reunion in Mena, Arkansas 2011

Lynda and I drove to Mena on Saturday (May 28) for a family gathering. Frances and Byron bought a place at Rich Mountain several years ago and a few years ago they moved from Texas and relocated in Mena. The house at the Rich Mountain place wasn't in any shape to be a home.

Heather and Lauri enjoy each other's company

In addition to the bunch of relatives present, there were also good friends and neighbors.

Maggie's husband, Russell, stayed in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area working, but Maggie brought there three boys. (Her sister, Mollie, helped out.)

Being Lazy

The weather has been very nice the past several days and I have be very lazy. I've spent some time installing ubuntu on computers and trying to learn more about that operating system. I've also done a little research on some history about my home town in Texas.

Flood of the Century

The Mississippi crested this morning at Memphis at something less than 48 feet. This is the highest level since the 1937 flood. The river is now three miles wide at Memphis whereas it is normally 0.3 mile wide.

A Rainy Saturday

Today has been cool and rainy. I was awakened twice during the early morning hours as thunderstorms moved through our area. There seemed to be quite a bit of rain along with the thunder and lightening. I finally got up around 7:30 and fixed some breakfast. After checking e-mail and facebook, I crawled back into bed about 9:00 and slept until after 11.

I got a lot of rest but not much else got done.

Spring

Today is a beautiful day! The weather is nice and some of the flowers are in bloom.

Our fiends, Ray and Carolyn, got back last week from their trip to the near east. They had a good trip will have several tales for us when we next see them.

Warming Up

We ended up getting about 5 inches of snow on Wednesday. The temperature got up to 40 degrees F today, but there is still a bit of snow around.

Lynda and I didn't get out until today. I drove her to Cathy's to get her hair done and the roads were o.k. with just a little ice in spots.

We watched a lot of T.V. last night and today. Our friends, Ray and Carolyn, are scheduled to fly to Israel on Feb 15th. Their plans call for visits to Jordan and Egypt. Maybe the Eqypt excursion will work out after all.

Here It Comes

I just saw the first few flakes of the new snow that we are getting today. The forecast is for us to get 1-2 inches during the winter storm. The streets and ground are clear of the last snowfall we had on Monday.

It is now 10:22 a.m. and the snow is really coming down. At this rate it shouldn't take too long for the ground to be covered since the temperature is below freezing.

I'm going to take a photo to post here.

This photo was taken at about 10:30 a.m.

This photo was taken at 1:45 p.m.
It is still snowing at 5:25 p.m.

Snow and More Snow

Lynda and I went to visit with Ray and Carolyn on Wednesday. We had no problem driving to Paris, TX from Forrest City, AR. We had a good visit with our friends that included seeing the Paris Community Theater's production of "Steel Magnolias". Lynda and I had seen the movie when in came out some years ago, but had never seen a stage production of the play. It was delightful.

Our plan called for us to drive back home on Friday.

Well, when we got up on Friday we had about 7 inches of snow on the ground and the advice was to not travel if it wasn't absolutely necessary. Since there wasn't an urgent need for us to get home, we stay and extra day with Ray and Carolyn.

Off To A Fast Start

This new year has gotten off to a fast start for us. Lynda and I went to Texas for our New Year's holiday. We were able to see our Jim and Linda, our friends in Marshall, and visit with them over breakfast at IHop. We had driven from Forrest City and spent the night at the Super 8 there in Marshall. We were able to see the Christmas lights in downtown Marshall before settling in at the motel.

After breakfast we visited Marshall Pottery. It has really changed from the interesting place it was in former years.

We spent the second night of our trip in Palestine where we visited my sister, Jimmie Ruth, and brothers, Woody and Bobby (down near Elkhart).

A Brand New Year

Well, we have bid farewell to the first decade of the new century. And we are looking forward to a grand new year to spend enjoying the life we live and hoping that we make some small contribution to the betterment of mankind.
