Hot, Humid Weather

It has been hot and humid around here. The wind has blown some, so I guess that makes things a little more bearable. I'm trying to get my little "patio area" finished. I started it last year and it still has a ways to go before it looks like anything. It's not even up to the point where I want to take a photo of it to post.

A Break In

While we were away from home visiting friends in Texas, someone broke into our house. C.L. discovered the break in when he came to do some work in the yard. He went across the street to a neighbor's house and she called the police. The thief punched a hole in the screen door to get onto the screened in porch, then broke the glass in the door to the hallway.

A friend called our daughter and she then called us.When we got home we made a list of the things that were taken and took it to the police station on Saturday.

Summertime

Well it's not officially summer yet, but the temperature and humidity today says that it is summer. I've got some plants in pots that I have to get into larger pots or the ground. We are going on a four-day trip to visit Ray and Carolyn and the plants will need larger containers in order to survive until we get home. I had hoped that I would get a drip irrigation set up before we left, but that's out of the question for now.

Later this summer we will need the drip system to be in operation when we go on a longer excursion to the Pacific Northwest.

Fresh Strawberries

We have been enjoying fresh strawberries from a place just up Crowley's Ridge from us. Last year we missed most of the strawberry season here because we were have fun in Ireland with Ray and Carolyn. We were saddened when the farm where we had bought strawberries and tomatoes for several years announced that they were closing--Pud is going into row crop farming. One day as we drove up hwy 284 on our way to eat supper at Colt there was a new sign at one of the orchards: Now Picking Strawberries.



So far we have had strawberries with our four-layered chocolate dessert, strawberries with ice cream, a strawberry and spinach salad with a homemade balsamic vinegar vinaigrette, strawberries dipped in chocolate, and strawberries eaten out-of-hand.

Southern Gospel Singing

I just returned from a program of gospel singing at Caldwell Baptist Church. I heard several gospel songs that I had not heard in years. Of course, some of the numbers were familiar hymns that we still sing at our United Methodist church. I didn't see many people that I know, but I did recognize a few of the choir members. Lynda doesn't appreciate gospel music as much as I do, so she stayed home and did other things.

A Choir Concert

Sunday afternoon Lynda and I went out to the local community college for the College Singers' spring concert. The choir did a wonderful job presenting American Spirituals and Old Time Gospel and then Folk Songs From around the World. Those of us who attended were also given the chance to stay for the Spotlight on Kids presentation of Little Red and the Riding Hoods.

We were given an extra benefit when Konoko gave us Simone's email address. I sent a short message to Simone and received a reply this morning.


Here are some photos of our garden taken earlier this spring. The Irises are still looking pretty good, but the azaleas have for the most part finished their show.

 

I have decided to let Lynda and C.L. do the gardening, but I still plan to take photos and post them every once in awhile.

Unstable Weather

Well spring is definitely here! This afternoon has been very hectic with the city siren sounding at least seven time in the past three hours. It's very nerve racking to have the alarm go off and not know any detail of what is going on. I turned the radio on to the local station and got the regular canned country music. They did announce the weather bulletins that the National Weather Service issued. I think it would be helpful if someone at the local station was informed about the current situation when the alarm is sounded.
